I’d like to remain at least semi-anonymous here, but let me give you the basics: I live in Toronto (for the Americans out there — this is a city in CANADA). :) I’m 33. My periods arrive like clockwork every 28 days, and I’ve been diagnosed with “unexplained infertility”. Here’s my awesome TTC history:
Ages ago: Went off the pill, took a year to get my period again.
2010: Started charting my basal body temperature in order to prevent pregnancy (ha!).
May, 2011: Kept charting, in hopes of actually getting preggo. Didn’t work.
Oct, 2011: First appointment with our RE; I look fine; hubby’s sperm looks fine. “You guys are gonna have a baby!” says our doctor with far too much confidence. Do a monitored natural cycle, which fails. Do an HSG (saline sonogram) to check my tubes; fine.
Nov, 2011: Another shot at timed intercourse; BFN.
Feb, 2012: IUI #1 (no meds except trigger shot); BFN.
Mar, 2012: IUI #2 (Letrozole, aka. Femara, with trigger shot); 3 eggs; BFN.
Apr, 2012: IUI #3 (Letrozole, Gonal-f, trigger shot); 4 eggs; BFN. Start getting my period, but when I go in for my beta, it comes back at 11. Two days later, still have a full period, get another beta and it’s 24. Then goes up to 80, 280 and 1,250. Clinic says “congrats”, doesn’t think it’s weird that I had a full period, books ultrasound for 6 weeks. My mom (a doctor) is more concerned and books me in for an immediate ultrasound at a different lab. Results come back and it’s an ectopic in my right tube. Go to the hospital and as the clock strikes midnight, on my birthday, get two shots of methotrexate in my butt.
July, 2012: Repeat HSG to check for tubal damage (none); try naturally; BFN.
Aug, 2012: IUI #4 (Letrozole, Gonal-f, trigger shot); 3 eggs; BFN.
Sep, 2012: IUI #5 (Letrozole, Gonal-f, trigger shot); 3 eggs; BFN.
Oct, 2012: IUI #6 (Letrozole, Gonal-f, trigger shot); 4 eggs; BFN.
Nov, 2012: Begin a mock cycle for IVF; taking Estrace and Endometrin. Then on Day 27, have a biopsy of my uterine lining, which will be sent to Yale University (!) for testing.
Dec, 2012: Lining comes back normal except for mild bacterial infection. All cleared for IVF. Start antibiotics, BCP and Lupron.
Jan, 2013: Start IVF cycle #1. 28 eggs retrieved, 21 fertilize with ICSI.
Yeah, Science!

Just found your blog! Aside from the fact that I’m pretty sure we’re at the same clinic, I’m also doing IVF in January or February so it’s always good to have buddies. Plus, Breaking Bad is pretty much the best show ever, yo.

I think it’s a great idea that you’ve decided on IVF. Just because your tubes are open, doesn’t mean they are functioning correctly to transport the egg/embryo; maybe the reason for the ectopic.

Just read your note on your blog’s title, although I thought Yeah, Science was great on it’s own. My blog is also titled from a TV scene. Season Two of Boardwalk Empire. Margaret Schroeder yields to the charms of the dashingly handsome hit man who works for her Gangster/Politician husband. She icily propositions him by asking “Are you mine to command?” He replies “if you’d like” whilst unbuttoning his trousers. I thought it would be nice if fertility could be as easy and honest as their seduction.
I also have unexplained infertility AND lost a pregnancy on my birthday. It’s the pits. (That last sentence was perhaps the grossest example of minimization that exists.) We haven’t started in with the science yet, but we’re looking to do so in the next couple of months. Thanks for sharing your story!

I was having brunch at this awesome place in Hollywood, my aunt from Peru came and I took here there, it was Dan, me and her and then guess you came in!!!! Yeah, Science!!!! He sat on the table right next to us and I had my aunt take a photo!! :)

If I ever meet him, I’m forcing him to pose for a photo while holding one of my ultrasound images. Then all would be complete and my blog would self-destruct. :)
Hahaha… you are hilarious! I talked to the waitress and she said he’s always there so wheeeennnn you come to LA bring that ultrasound picture and I’ll take you there!
